New Cornish Chough Lino Print

New Cornish Chough Lino Print

I'm delighted to introduce my latest lino print, a small edition inspired by one of Cornwall's most iconic birds, the chough.

The chough has long been associated with Cornwall, recognised by its distinctive curved red bill and acrobatic flight along our rugged coastline. Although this print is monochrome, I wanted to capture the character and presence of this remarkable bird as it pauses on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea.

As with all of my work, the process began with careful sketching and observation before being transferred onto lino and hand carved using traditional tools. Working on a smaller scale presents its own challenges, requiring fine details to be simplified while still retaining the personality of the subject. I particularly enjoyed carving the textures within the feathers, rocks and sea, using a combination of bold shapes and delicate marks to create contrast and movement throughout the design.

Each print is individually hand inked and printed using Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash inks on quality printmaking paper. The slight variations that occur during the printing process make every impression unique, reflecting the handmade nature of lino printing.

Creating lino prints continues to be a welcome contrast to my day-to-day work, offering a chance to slow down and focus on the simple process of carving and printing by hand. I'm pleased to add this new chough to my growing collection of wildlife and coastal-inspired prints and hope it brings a small piece of Cornwall into your home.
